The Curtis Group Chairman and CEO Keith Curtis reflects on the strength and impact of American philanthropy in a recent op-ed, “America’s Continued Generosity Is Worth Celebrating,” published by The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press.
Drawing on findings from the latest Giving USA Annual Report on Philanthropy and nearly four decades of experience working alongside nonprofit organizations, Keith looks beyond the headline numbers to consider what Americans’ generosity makes possible in communities across the country.
Americans contributed an estimated $617.2 billion to charity in 2025, surpassing $600 billion for the first time. Yet Keith notes that the significance of that generosity extends far beyond the total itself—from feeding families and advancing medical research to educating children, strengthening the arts and supporting communities during times of greatest need.
The column also explores a changing philanthropic landscape, including declining donor participation, the importance of inspiring people of all generations and income levels to see themselves as part of philanthropy and the many ways individuals can support the causes they value.
As Keith writes, the record giving provides an opportunity to consider not only what Americans accomplished collectively, but also the role each of us can play in sustaining a culture of generosity for future generations.
