The world lost a remarkable human being when Frank Batten Sr. passed away this morning at 82.

Batten’s life is evidence of just how much of a positive difference one person can make. Founder of Landmark Communications (now known as Landmark Media Enterprises) and a philanthropist and leader of the highest order, Batten was the heir to great wealth. But rather than living the easy life, he immersed himself in improving the community, put his fortune to work for countless charities, and instilled a culture of philanthropy all around him.

From his role in ending massive resistance in local schools to bringing Old Dominion University to life to creating a scholarship foundation for low-income students, Batten was devoted to education. He continued to be a major supporter of ODU (Keith’s alma mater), as well as Hollins University (Wendy’s alma mater), UVa., Virginia Wesleyan College, Harvard Business School, and the new Norfolk library.

Either personally or through the Landmark Foundation, he also made generous gifts to many of our clients, including Tidewater Community College, The Norfolk Foundation, Virginia Zoo, Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, Oasis Social Ministry, Park Place School, Horizons Hampton Roads, Schooner Virginia, Sugar Plum Bakery, YWCA of South Hampton Roads, and YMCA of Portsmouth.

The Curtis Group pays tribute to this extraordinary leader, whose life and legacy will long be remembered.
